Description
The brick walls facing the path to the rear of numbers 136-138 High Street date mostly from around 1800, with some parts from the mid-19th century and some modern patching. These walls are constructed of brick with a soldier course and feature a battered base along with 'broached' wall buttresses. The north-east face of the south-west wall is pitch-coated. The lower 45 yards of the south-west wall stand approximately 7 feet 5 inches high, while the remaining walls are about 6 feet 3 inches high. The oldest section appears to be the lower part of the north-east wall, which may date from the late 18th century. These two walls flank a footpath that connects High Street to Back Lane, representing a good example of backyard development on burgage strips and creating a picturesque setting for a well-frequented footpath.
