Description

This is a late 18th-century building consisting of two houses originally designed as a symmetrical block, located on Kingsbury Street. The exterior is vitreous brick with red window surrounds and dressings, set on a bath stone plinth. A painted string course runs above the ground and first floor windows; the upper level string course has been moulded and partially removed. The building has a painted stone coping to the parapet, extending upwards to form pediments on slight projections at each end of the front. These pediments are topped by small semi-circular windows in their tympana, and incorporate a Mansard roof covered in old tiles, with two dormers. The central part of each wing features a Palladian window with a moulded Doric stucco surround, though its glazing has been altered. The central first floor has three windows with moulded frames and keystones. The ground floor has one window in the left wing, a central three-light window with barred diamond-pattern fixed side lights, and a 19th-century three-light window in the right-hand gable. Two six-panel doors flank the central ground floor window, each with a radiating and wreathed fanlight, and are sheltered by porches with slender Doric columns and a modified entablature featuring a double-deck frieze and cornice. The right-hand porch is enriched with fluting towards the lower part of the frieze and a row of balls beneath the cornice; the upper part of the frieze incorporates angle fluting and roundel ornamentation. The right-hand door has a fluted architrave surround with angle blocks. The building is situated at a right angle to the street. It forms a group with numbers 1, 2, 4 to 11 (consecutive), numbers 40 to 48A (consecutive), opposite, and numbers 1, 17 and 18 Silvester Street.
