Description
The Bell House Hotel is a building that originated as a house in the 16th century and was altered in the early 19th century. It features painted rubble stone construction with stone slate roofs and brick stacks. The building is two storeys high and has an L-plan layout. The early 19th-century flush mullion windows are adorned with hoodmoulds and Gothic cast-iron small-paned glazing. On the front, there are four 2-light windows on the upper floor and two 3-light windows, along with a half-glazed door set in a depressed-arched surround, which also has a hoodmould, and a 3-light window below it. The second bay of the building has a gable above, while the fourth bay is the gabled end of a cross wing that features a large brick stack to the left. The roof of the cross wing is swept low on the west side. The east end wall has similar 2-light and 3-light windows. The southwest rear wing consists of two sections with a stack between them, and the roof is hipped at the south end over a window framed in an 18th-century stone architrave. There are 20th-century additions in the rear angle and behind the main structure. Inside, the ground floor has been completely altered, except for a large timber-lintel fireplace located in the west end room. Some windbracing can be seen in the roof.
