Description
The Master's Lodge at Marlborough College was built between 1845 and 1850, designed by architect Edward Blore. This two-storey building is constructed of red brick and features a hipped slate roof. The red brick stacks have distinctive tops that were likely added in the 1860s. The lodge has a modillioned eaves cornice and long and short brick quoins. It includes three ranges of sash windows with glazing bars set in brick "Gibbs" surrounds. An extension was added to the south side around 1860 to 1865.
In 1861, a porch was added by William White, showcasing polychrome herringbone brickwork, corner piers with pyramidal caps, and buttresses, along with an open parapet above. The porch features three segmental arches with hoodmoulds, supported by two squat stone columns with foliate capitals. The Master's Lodge is an early example of the revival of 17th-century architectural forms, and while it has details reminiscent of 1700, its proportions reflect those of an early 19th-century villa.
