Description
Ogbourne St Andrew War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated at the center of a traffic island at the junction of the A346 trunk road and the main road into the village.
The memorial is made from rough-hewn granite and features a tall Latin cross that rises from an arched plinth, which is set on a two-stepped base made of roughly-coursed sarsen stones. The entire structure rests on an irregular concrete slab that is level with the ground.
On the south-west face of the plinth, there is a smooth, inset panel with leaded lettering that reads: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." This panel lists 13 names, including each individual's rank and regiment.
Additionally, a bronze plaque is attached to the south-east side of the plinth. This plaque is incised with the dates 1939 - 1945 and includes the names, ranks, regiments, and dates of death of two casualties from the Second World War.
