Description

The Forge is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, with later alterations. It features a timber frame with brick noggings, stone, and a thatched roof. The building is single storey with an attic and consists of two bays, with a lobby entry opposite the stack at the left end; the original door has been replaced by a window. The framing consists of two panels high with curved corner braces. There are two and three-light timber windows with iron casements typical of the 17th century. A third bay made of sarsen stone has been added to the left end, which extends under the roof and was formerly the location of the forge. Inside, the central bay contains a large fireplace with a chamfered mantel beam and curved windbraces supporting the clasped purlin roof. The framed bays have chamfered spine beams and similarly chamfered joists. The position of the stair has been altered.
