Description
Tresco House is a vicarage, built between 1848 and 1849 and designed by William Butterfield. It is now divided into flats. The building is constructed of brick, with the front elevation tile hung, and has a tiled roof. It is an example of the domestic revival style. The asymmetrical elevation features a large gable on the right, a smaller central gable, and an external brick stack on the left. The central entrance is a boarded door with a segmental head, set within a slightly projecting, buttressed porch that is tile hung. An offsetting stack is located to the right of the porch and the end of the roof extends down to meet an outbuilding parallel to the road. A steeply pitched and tiled outbuilding, altered in the 20th century, encloses a yard on the north side. Dormers are present, one facing the road and one to the rear. The building represents Butterfield’s third attempt at this style and is an important early example, alongside works by Street and Webb.
