Description

Nos. 1 to 18 Middle Rank form a terrace of late 17th-century weavers' houses, with Nos. 5 to 18 having undergone partial rebuilding in recent years. The houses are mostly two storeys high, with attics in the gables. Some gables feature blocked oval windows. Windows are generally two- and three-light casements, with some having plain stone mullions while others have moulded stone mullions. There are plain, square-headed doorways. No. 1 has weathered string courses over the ground-floor windows, and two doors set together in the centre. Nos. 2 and 3 retain some sash windows and an original rectangular dripmould. No. 4 has sash windows without glazing bars. Weathered string courses and plinths are visible. Nos. 5 to 9 are three storeys high. They have modern pantiled roofs with eaves, except for No. 8, which retains a gable. Weathered string courses are present. Some sash windows are without glazing bars. Nos. 10 to 12 also have modern pantiled roofs, weathered string courses, and some sash windows with glazing bars. No. 10 features a semi-circular hood made of hollow stone, supported by scroll brackets over the door. Nos. 13 to 18 are three storeys high, with modern pantiled roofs and weathered string courses. Doorways of Nos. 14 and 15 have flat stone hoods on cut stone brackets, while No. 18 has a flat hood on curved brackets over its door. While there has been some extensive rebuilding, the original character has been maintained. The terrace contributes significantly to the townscape and is valued as part of a group with the other listed buildings in Middle Rank.
