Description

This is a terrace of late 17th and 18th century houses, numbered 1 to 25, located on the north side of Tory. The terrace comprises some houses of three storeys and others of two storeys with dormers. Several original three-light casement windows remain, featuring stone mullions and dripmoulds; the majority have been replaced with sash windows. Weathered strings are visible at ground floor level in some instances. Doorways are square-headed and in plain openings. Nos 7, 8 and 12 have flat stone hoods supported by cut stone brackets. No 14 features three doorways with triangular pediments on cut stone brackets. No 16 has a moulded string at first-floor level and plain strings at sill levels, with sash windows in pairs in plain reveals. No 18 is two storeys with an attic; its windows are arranged in groups of three (with the side windows narrower), and are sash windows with glazing bars, some lights being blocked. First-floor windows are topped with pediments on cut stone brackets. Moulded strings are present at the first floor and sill levels of the attic. A square-headed central door is fitted with a fanlight and double doors. Nos 20 and 21 have three doorways with flat stone hoods. Nos 23, 24 and 25 retain some original three-light stone-mullioned casements and have weathered strings at all floor levels. While the individual properties are not all of significant architectural merit, collectively they form an important group as the principal part of the highest terrace on the hillside. The listed buildings at Tory form a group with Budbury House and Budbury Place.
