Description
Ashton Mill is a mill house that has been converted into a residential home. It dates from the 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries and is constructed of squared limestone rubble with a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high with attics and originally featured a single storey and attic section to the south, which housed mill machinery over the leet of the Thames. This southern section was rebuilt around 1880 to match the earlier part of the building. A rear wing was added between 1630 and 1650, along with various later service extensions.
The entrance door, which was originally located below the east gable, has been moved to the centre bay facing north. It features a moulded stone doorcase and an oak door. The ground floor has twenty-pane sash windows, while the first floor has leaded windows with chamfered timber lintels. The wing has stone lintels. The chimney stacks are made of ashlar with moulded cornices. Inside, the mill house has moulded ceiling beams with run-out stops on both floors, and the service rooms display elaborated bar stopped chamfers. The roof structure includes threaded double purlins.
