Description

The Market Cross is located in the center of The Green in Aldbourne. It is a medieval structure made of sarsen stone. The cross features a raised octagonal base with one offset, which supports an octagonal cross shaft that has two offsets and a very worn base. The head of the cross, which is above 1.3 meters high, was renewed in 1764 and includes a moulded capital and a stone Latin cross that is inclined like a gnomon. This head was renewed around 1965. The Market Cross is also scheduled as an ancient monument in Wiltshire.
