Description
The Market House is a house located in a row on The Green in Aldbourne, dating from the 16th to 17th century, with refurbishments made in the late 18th to early 19th century. The lower walls are made of chalkstone and sarsen, and it originally likely featured a jettied timber-framed facade, which is now partly covered in stucco. The building has a tiled roof and is two stories tall with four bays, originally designed to be one room deep, and it has a 20th-century rear wing on the right. The entrance is located in the second bay, behind a stack in the third bay, featuring a reeded six-panel door with a moulded flat canopy and a panelled soffit, all set back into the wall. The windows are three-light leaded windows from the early 20th century. There are stacks located centrally and on the right gable. Inside, the left living room has closely set heavy joists that bear carpenter's marks and a chamfered spine beam.
