Description
The Skipper Public House is a public house located on Drew Street in Higher Brixham, likely dating from the 17th or 18th century, with some superficial remodeling in the 19th century. It features solid rendered walls and a hipped slate roof that slopes to the right, with rendered chimneys on each end wall and a late 19th-century red-brick chimney on the front roof slope. The building is two storeys high and four windows wide, with the second upper-storey window from the right being blind.
On the ground floor, there is a round-arched doorway with panelled double doors, positioned off-centre to the right. This doorway is flanked by two 20th-century three-light mullioned and transomed wood casement windows. The entire grouping is framed by four pilasters—one at each end and two beside the doorway—that support an entablature. Above each pilaster, there is a projecting section of fluted frieze. To the left, there is a cart entrance with plank doors and a slightly curved head. The upper-storey windows are 6-paned sashes set in box-frames, and the blind window features a moulded architrave. The building has a small boxed eaves-cornice. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
