Description
No. 69 is a detached house dating from the mid-19th century, situated in Higher Brixham. The house has solid rendered walls, with the left side wall slate hung. It features a slate roof and rendered chimneys on each side wall. The building is two storeys high, with an inserted garret. The front has a symmetrical three-window arrangement. The centre doorway has panelled flanking pilasters, and likely originally had a cornice above, though this is now concealed by a trellised porch. The doorway has a four-panelled door with a central bead-moulding. The windows are 2-paned sashes, each with a single horizontal glazing bar. There are giant panelled pilaster strips at each end of the front facade. A deep flat eaves cornice runs along the top. A flat-topped dormer window was inserted in the left side in the mid to late 20th century.
The front garden is enclosed by a low rendered wall with flat stone coping. Along the wall are five square piers of squared Devonian limestone, spaced at intervals, with rendered tapered tops and ball finials – one at the left-hand end, two forming gate piers at the house entrance, and two forming gate piers for a carriage entrance at the right-hand end. Originally, the wall had an iron railing of closely spaced uprights, which has since been replaced by a late 20th century patterned railing in a mid-19th century style.
