Description
The Piazza, originally known as Salem Chapel, was built around the 1850s for Mr. Robert Stark. It was converted into the School of Science and Art in 1864 and renamed the Vivian Institute for the Promotion of Science and Art in 1878. The building was enlarged in 1887 and is currently used as a restaurant.
Constructed from Flemish bond brick with Ham Hill dressings, the building has two storeys and features a pedimented gable facing the road. The ground floor has three bays, with paired Doric pilasters supporting an entablature that includes a triglyph frieze and a projecting cornice on brackets. The first floor is adorned with paired Ionic pilasters and an entablature, topped by a dentil cornice at the pediment. The central entrance has a recessed double door with six panels on each leaf, and a stone plaque above the doorway commemorates the 1887 enlargement for the Jubilee. The outer bays have large 12-pane sash windows, while the first floor features a secondary 4-pane sash and an oculus in the gable.
The interior has not been inspected recently but was described in 1985 as having an "undistinguished hall and outbuildings at rear." Historical notes indicate that the floor contains traces of the chapel aisles.
