Description

The Post Office, opened in 1912, was built under the supervision of John Rutherford, architect to H.M. Office of Works, and cost over £12,000. It is constructed of Portland and Bathstone ashlar with a slate roof and is an example of Baroque style architecture. The building has a plan with a central entrance leading into the office, and an archway to the right.

The exterior is three storeys high and comprises seven bays, with the outer bays set back. The ground floor is rusticated with quoins. A deeply-projecting cornice sits on brackets, leading to a blocking course and a balustraded parapet. A first-floor string course runs along the front. The central doorway features a moulded architrave with a window above, surmounted by a segmental-headed pediment on consoles. Flanking the doorway are round-headed recesses, with moulded keystones; a window sits within the left recess, and an archway within the right. First-floor windows have moulded architraves with keystones, with the central window topped by a broken pediment and the others by segmental-headed pediments. The outer bays have second-floor oculi with decorative swags. A contemporary gas light is fixed to the front.

The interior has been altered.
