Description

Clifton Terrace is a group of seven villas built beginning in 1853. The villas are constructed of stucco and have slate roofs with hipped ends, featuring stacks with rendered shafts. They are arranged in a west-facing row. The layout is of a double-depth plan for each villa, with a doorway to the left of each, except for No. 7, which is accessed from the north return.

The architectural style is Classical. Each villa is three storeys high and has three bays. The terrace is composed of three similar houses in the centre, flanked by matching pairs, with differing end houses. Features include a plinth, sunk panels below the ground floor windows, platbands to the first and second floors, and deep boxed eaves. Nos 3 to 5 are divided by pilaster strips, while Nos 2 and 6 have front gables with deep verges supported by moulded brackets. All ground floor openings are segmental-headed. The original front doors feature overlights, and the original windows were 12-pane sashes, although many have been reglazed as 2-pane sashes. Several first-floor windows originally included cast-iron balconies on brackets. Nos 1, 2 and 3 have segmental-headed cornices on plain brackets. Some replacement windows retain original tripartite sashes — 12-pane in the centre, with 4-pane in the outer lights. Second-floor windows originally had 12-pane sashes (in Nos 7 and 6), and are mostly now 2-pane timber sashes, with plastic replacements in No. 7. Nos 2 and 6 feature round-headed second-floor windows with 2-pane sashes. No. 1 has a two-storey, pedimented entrance block on the left return, with a segmental-headed recess for the door and a round-headed first-floor window with a 12-pane sash. A semicircular second-floor window, featuring Y tracery, is also recessed.

The interior has not been inspected, but may contain features of interest. No.1 has a distinctive round-headed second-floor window with Y tracery.
