Description

A terrace of four houses built around 1860, likely designed by J.W. Rowell. The houses are constructed of snecked local grey limestone rubble with gabled slate roofs. Chimneys have grey limestone shafts with Bathstone dressings and old glazed chimney pots.

The buildings are arranged in a staggered layout, with entrances to the end houses located on the return walls. They are designed in a Tudor Gothic style. The two-storey façade is symmetrical, with projecting gabled blocks on the left and right and two gables centrally. The end houses feature ground-floor bay windows with hipped slate roofs and three-light casement windows, alongside two-light casement windows on the first floor. The two central houses incorporate projecting gabled porches with shouldered doorways and lozenge windows in the returns. The central section has a crank-headed three-light ground-floor window and a first floor that projects, featuring a blank crank-headed arch above two-light mullioned and transomed windows. A gabled porch is present on the left return. The right return has a later lean-to which obscures the original entrance. The interior has not been inspected, but may retain noteworthy original features. The group value of the terrace lies in its well-executed Tudor Gothic detailing and contribution to the streetscape.
