Description

This is a terrace of seven houses located at 3-15 Vaughan Parade in Torquay, built in 1831 to the designs of Jacob Harvey. The buildings have undergone thorough renovation, replanning, and rear additions in 1991. They are finished in stucco with a slate roof and feature stacks with rendered shafts. The terrace is positioned prominently, facing the inner harbour, with each house arranged as pairs, featuring double-depth plans, doors towards the centre, and end stacks, with stairs facing the doors.

Originally, there were two shopfronts, but the current layout has converted each ground floor into a shop. The ground floors of Nos. 3 and 4 have been removed to create a walkway to the rear, and a single-storey range of shops has been added along the rear wall, inspired by designs from Cheltenham and Bath.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, with a 14-bay front where the ground floor has been almost entirely renewed. The recessed front doors have deep overlights set in doorcases with panelled reveals and pilasters featuring incised Greek key decoration. The shop fronts have been completely renewed, with pilasters on either side, windows with deep fascias, and glazed shop doors that include low panels, overlights, and pilasters. The first-floor windows are 6 over 9-pane sashes, with the two right-hand windows featuring original cast-iron balconies, while some others have modern copies. The second-floor windows are 3 over 6-pane sashes, and there are attic dormers with segmental heads. The shops on the rear elevation are designed in a historical style. The interior has not been inspected in detail but appears to have been replanned.
