Description
The retaining wall fronting the Custom House and Nos. 11-17 Overgang, as well as Kelvin Court, is likely from the early 19th century. It is constructed from roughly-coursed Devonian limestone rubble, with natural bedrock visible in some areas at the base. The wall features three buttresses and has a chamfered coping made of limestone and other stones, along with some red brick. Notably, the coping alongside the steps leading up from The Quay is not chamfered. Additionally, opposite No. 14 Overgang, the top of the wall has been replaced by an iron railing, which is supported at each end by square piers topped with pyramidal caps. This wall, along with the houses behind it, is a significant element of the town's appearance, particularly when viewed from across the harbour.
