Description

The Old Custom House is a former custom house that has been converted into a shop. It likely dates from the early 19th century. The building features solid rendered walls, except for the upper storey of the left side wall, which is jettied and has slate-hung timber-framing that overlooks the harbour. The roof is slated, and there is a rendered brick chimney on the right side wall.

The structure is two storeys high and has a one-window gable-end front facing Overgang. To the left, there is a house door with a bracketed moulded cornice, and to the right, there is a wide plank door. The upper storey contains a sash window with six panes over six panes, and it has a broad sill-band that breaks forward below the window. The front of the building rises to form a parapet with moulded coping in the shape of an open triangular pediment.

On the left side wall, there is one window in the ground storey and three above; the rightmost of these has plain wooden sashes, while the other two are fixed late 20th-century wooden sashes. The right side wall has two windows in the upper storey: a 20th-century metal casement window on the left and a four-paned fixed wood-framed window on the right. The Old Custom House fronts Overgang and is part of a group with Nos 11-14. According to a description from 1975, it once displayed the Royal Arms above the front door.
