Description

The Crown and Anchor Public House is an early 19th-century establishment located on the Quay in Lower Brixham. The building features a solid rendered ground storey and slate-hung upper storeys, which are likely supported by timber framing. It has a slated roof and a red-brick chimney on the right gable end, which has been rebuilt at the top. The structure stands three storeys high and is two windows wide. There is a doorway to the left of the ground storey, which has a late 20th-century door, and to the right, there is a large late 20th-century bow window. The upper storeys are adorned with barred sash windows in box frames, with 6 over 6 panes on the second storey and 8 over 8 panes on the third storey. The building features a deep, flat eaves cornice with paired brackets. The interior has only been inspected in the ground-floor bar, which contains no notable features. The slate-hung front is a common sight in nearby towns like Totnes, making this example an unusual and significant survival in Brixham.
