Description
The gate piers and wall at the entrance to Brunel Manor were built around 1870, at the same time as Brunel Manor itself. The gardens were designed by Nesfield. The structure is made of local grey crazed limestone with ashlar dressings. The plan features gate piers on either side of the carriage gateway, with a simpler pier to the right for a pedestrian gateway, and convex curving walls leading to the carriage turn. The substantial square-section gate piers have battered plinths, chamfered moulded corners, and caps topped with four cusped gables that hold the bases of lampholders. The pedestrian gate pier is shorter and has a simpler pyramidal cap. The convex curving walls on either side are made of crazed masonry, with chamfered ashlar caps and plinths, ending in low piers with caps. This structure is included for its group value with Brunel Manor.
