Description
Washington House is a villa dating from 1858, originally shown on Ordnance Survey maps as Watcombe House. The building faces east towards the sea, with its entrance on the south side. It is rectangular in plan.
The villa is plastered with a slate roof featuring lead rolls and wrought-iron finials, and rendered stacks. Deep eaves with a dentil cornice, an eaves band, and projecting strings at first-floor level are present, along with rusticated quoins. The six-window main (garden) elevation is arranged in three bays of three windows each. The three bays on the left have round-headed ground-floor windows with moulded architraves; the first-floor windows have shouldered architraves, floating cornices, and consoles to the sills, retaining their original 12-pane sashes. A two-storey canted bay is situated to the right, with round-headed ground-floor windows, moulded architraves, and stained glass above the transoms. The first-floor windows in the canted bay are 2-pane sashes with moulded architraves and sill blocks. A projecting porch with pilasters and a projecting cornice below the parapet is located in the angle with the left return, while a 20th-century conservatory has been added to the left return.
The interior has not been inspected, but it is said to retain an original staircase and plaster cornices.
