Description

The lodge to Lupton House, including the gate piers, was built around 1840, likely designed by George Wightwick as part of his enhancements to Lupton House for Sir JB Yarde-Boller. Constructed from limestone ashlar, it features slate roofs that are gabled at the ends, with stacks that have octagonal stone shafts and cornices. The lodge is designed in the Tudor style and has a T-plan layout, with a central front projecting wing facing the road, heated by a left lateral stack, and a main block with end stacks. There is a porch on the right side of the front wing and a single-storey block that adjoins the left side of the front wing. The gateway is located immediately to the right.

The exterior is two storeys high, with coped gables that have kneelers, shallow projecting stacks with set-offs, and paired shafts. It features timber casement windows with glazing bars and has an asymmetrical front with a 1:1 window arrangement. The wing includes a four-light ground-floor canted bay with moulded mullions, and the bay is topped with a parapet decorated with blind half-roundels. The first floor has two-light mullioned windows with drip moulds, and the gable is topped with a tall octagonal finial. The single-storey block has a coped gable and a lancet window. The projecting gabled porch on the right side of the wing has a chamfered three-centred outer doorway and an inner door made of planks and studs. The octagonal gate piers have moulded cornices and shallow pyramidal caps. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features. The lodge has group value with the coeval kennel block located on the opposite side of the A379.
