Description
These stables, coach house, brew house, kennels, and other ancillary buildings are located immediately north west of Gramercy Hall School in Churston Ferrers. They were probably built around 1772 and altered and enlarged by George Wightwick around 1843.
The buildings are constructed of stone rubble, with some areas painted and others rendered. They have slated roofs with some hipped chimneys featuring cornices, mirroring those on the main house. The layout includes a long stable range with a coach house at the right-hand end. A brew house, now used as the school gymnasium, is attached to the coach house at a right angle. Small houses stand forward in the front area at either end; these appear to have been linked by a demolished range originally. The right-hand house connects to the stables, likely as part of the coach house, while the left-hand house and the left end of the stables abut a courtyard containing kennels.
The buildings are mostly single-storeyed, with garrets in the houses. The front of the stables and coach house has 11 bays. A round-arched main doorway features simple imposts, archivolt, and keystone, with a top entablature and blocking course. There are three segmental-headed windows with keystones on either side, each with 2-light wood casements and transom lights; the windows to the right have 3 panes per light. At the right-hand end of the coach house, there are two round-arched openings, with similar detailing, except the right-hand opening is damaged. A lean-to obscures one of these openings. The houses have three-bay fronts, flanked and separated by Doric pilasters supporting an entablature with a triangular pediment. The centre window has a blank panel above and a semicircular window sits within the pediment. The right-hand house has two blocked windows and a plank door in the right side wall. The left-hand house, which was ruinous at the time of survey, has had a window converted into a door and other windows inserted into the side bays. The brew house has two windows and two doorways (one converted into a window) in its side wall, facing the house; original windows have small-paned glazing, with the window to the right featuring 6 panes. The kennels consist of two ruined buildings flanking entrances from the stable yard and two more flanking the opposing entrance. To the north-east is a semi-circular arc of eight cells with paired doorways and arches of red brick; these are covered by a 20th-century flat concrete roof and fronted by a large granite trough. To the south-west, within an enclosing wall, are the footings of a small square building.
