Description

The Torbay Inn is a public house located on Fisher Street in Paignton. It is likely from the 17th century and has undergone several alterations, with a modern plaque on the front dating to 1647. The building is rendered, likely primarily made of stone, with some evidence of cob at the right end. It has slate roofs, including a left-end stack and both rear and front lateral stacks, with the front lateral stack featuring a brick shaft.

The layout consists of a single-depth arrangement with three rooms and a through-passage, with the passage located to the right of the center. The right-hand room is heated by the front lateral stack. Alterations at the left end have incorporated a former carriageway entrance to the stables at the rear into the pub.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front. There is a lateral stack on the far right with slate-hung set-offs and a boarded passageway door alongside. To the left, there are two late 18th-century doors leading to the bars, both featuring moulded doorcases, six-panel doors with fielded upper panels, and gabled, slated porch hoods on moulded brackets, with the gables designed as moulded pediments. The ground floor has three windows and the first floor has two, all fitted with two-pane sashes that have 20th-century leaded panes. The right-hand first-floor window is lower-set.

The left return of the main range has a canted corner and an adjoining angled block, likely from the late 19th century, which originally contained the carriageway entrance to the stables at the rear. This block features timber casement windows with glazing bars and has reportedly been incorporated into the public bar in the last twelve years, according to the landlord.

The interior currently has historic features concealed by 20th-century plasterboard, but early carpentry may still exist. The roof was not inspected during the survey, but it is believed to be from the 17th century and is said to have well-crafted A-frames with no signs of smoke-blackening.
