Description

Nos. 39-49, including the front garden walls and railings, is a terrace of six houses located on Ranscombe Road in Lower Brixham, dating from the early 19th century. The houses feature solid rendered walls and slated roofs, with rendered chimneys on the left side walls of Nos. 39, 43, and 47. They have a double-depth plan and are two storeys tall, with inserted garrets.

No. 39 is two windows wide, while the others are one window wide. It has a doorway to the right and a passage-door at the extreme right-hand end, leading to the rear of the terrace. Nos. 41 and 43, as well as Nos. 45 and 47, have paired doorways next to their party walls. No. 49 features a doorway in its left side wall.

No. 43 retains an original six-panelled door with fluted bottom panels, while the top two panels are now glazed. No. 45 has a trellised wood porch with louvred sides and an ogee roof. The windows include plain sashes at Nos. 39 and 41, barred sashes at No. 45 with 12 over 12 panes on the ground storey and 6 over 6 panes above, and a tall sash window at No. 47 with 6 over 12 panes on the ground storey and plain sashes above. No. 49 has wood French windows in the ground storey with two panes per leaf and plain sashes in the upper storey.

No. 41 features rusticated pilaster strips at each end of its front, and No. 49 has similar strips on the right, along with raised quoins on the left. All six houses have dormer windows of varying sizes, likely added later, although the small gabled dormer at No. 45 may be original.

The front gardens are elevated above the road and have stone rubble retaining walls, painted at Nos. 39 and 43, and rendered at Nos. 45-49. The gardens at Nos. 39 and 43 are adorned with 19th-century iron railings featuring fleurs-de-lys heads on the uprights. No. 45 has a curved coping that rises at each end to a pier topped with a pyramidal cap and ball finial. This terrace is included for its group value.
