Description
The Battery Observation Post at Battery Gardens, built in 1940, is a two-storey structure made of reinforced concrete. It features steps leading down to a first-floor balcony, which is accessed from the northwest side. The balcony has a cantilevered roof that provides a view of the sea to the northeast. The entrance to the ground floor is located directly beneath this balcony, with a wide opening. The building is set into the cliff, with its flat roof level with North Furzeham Road. The upper storey housed high precision range finders and served as the communication centre for the searchlight positions and guns. A Bar and Stroud range finder was located in the lower part of the building. This observation post was the operational focal point of the Emergency Coastal Defence Battery, one of many constructed in 1940 to enhance protection for harbour installations. It remains remarkably well-preserved, along with the associated searchlight and gun positions.
