Description

The former artillery store, now serving as a public shelter, was built between 1795 and 1802. It is constructed of coursed stone rubble and features a slated roof. The building is a simple, small oblong shape with a wide doorway on the east side, which faces the magazine and the site of the gun battery. It is a single storey with a loft. The front of the building has a doorway flanked by two large windows, all three of which have deep rectangular holes in the jambs, likely for securing the door and window frames. There is a plain hatch with a wooden lintel at the top of the north gable. Inside, the loft floor has plain beams and joists, which are probably from the 20th century. Pye and Slater describe the roof as being of relatively recent date.
