Description
HM Coastguard lookout is located in the northern fort at Berry Head, Brixham. This building, originally an artillery magazine, dates from around 1780 and was remodelled between 1794 and 1802. It was heightened in the 20th century to serve as a lookout. Constructed of stone rubble, the perimeter wall features coursed stone rubble with ashlar corner and gate piers. The building has a flat-topped roof, slated at the sides, and is tightly enclosed by a square perimeter wall.
The entrance is on the east side, with a blocked entrance on the north. The structure appears to be single-storeyed and has no openings except for a simple doorway on the east side. The tall perimeter wall has square piers at each corner topped with pyramidal caps. There are two matching gate piers in the east wall, with a flat arch above the door-head made of well-cut voussoirs. The wall is capped with a flat dressed coping, which continues around the piers as an architrave to the caps, and has a chamfered added coping of stone rubble on top. On the north side, there is a plain opening 3 meters wide, which is blocked with stone rubble. The walls also contain several small cement-rendered apertures, likely used as gun-slits during the Second World War. The building was converted to a coastguard lookout in 1906 and underwent further alterations in 1963.
