Description
The Berry Head Hotel is a building that originally served as a military hospital and later became a private house before being converted into a hotel. It was constructed between 1809 and 1810, with some additions made to the north in the late 20th century. The structure is made of Devonian limestone rubble and features a hipped slated roof. The main building is U-shaped, with ranges extending to the north, east, and west, and includes two smaller buildings to the south of the east and west ranges, which were likely originally connected to the main building.
The entrance was probably located on the west side, situated between the two sections of the west range. The hotel has two storeys and a nine-window front on the north side, with the end windows set in shallow projections. The east and west sides each have seven-window fronts. The windows feature flat lintels made of three limestone voussoirs, although the west and north ranges have late 20th-century windows, while the east range retains some original six-paned sash windows. The building is topped with a simple stepped cornice and a low parapet with flat coping.
Notably, this building was later the home of Reverend Henry Francis Lyte, who is known for writing the hymn "Abide with Me."
