Description

The No. 15 Shop (Q Shop) and the western bay of the Brass Stores (formerly K Shop) at British Rail Engineering Limited Swindon Works are wagon shops that have been converted into forges, dating from before 1849. They were designed by Daniel Gooch and I.K. Brunel. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble, primarily featuring corrugated sheet and glazed roofs. They consist of two sections, with No. 15 Shop located to the north, which was originally part of a continuous range of buildings that served as the wagon shop when the works were completed in 1849.

The external (west) wall of No. 15 Shop has 19 bays, while the Brass Stores have 18 bays, each separated by a pilaster. The windows feature a combination of original mullion and transom designs with three vertical panes in each quarter, which pivot, as well as some later sash windows. Internally, the roof is constructed of wrought iron. Despite numerous alterations, much of the west range of shops remains intact, reflecting the design shown in an 1849 painting of the completed works. This site is an important part of the Victorian industrial heritage at the Great Western Railway works.
