Description

Carriage Works No. 8 Shop is a building constructed between 1870 and 1872 for the Great Western Railway, later extended to the east between 1872 and 1873. It now serves as industrial workshops. The structure is made of rock-faced snecked Foxwood rubble, featuring Bath stone quoins, strings, and window dressings. It has slate roofs with apex glazing and ventilation cowls. The street elevation consists of 15 bays arranged in five groups of three, and the building is two storeys high. The ground floor has arcaded windows with segmental heads and corniced keystones supported by cast iron columns. The first floor features brick segmental window heads, also with corniced keystones and multiple pivot lights, along with glazed doors at ground level. The east facade is splayed.

Internally, the ground level has iron joists on cast iron columns that support brick segmental vaults. The upper floor contains eight bays of cast iron round section keeled stanchions, which are lugged at storey heights and carry I-section plates and light steel angle trusses across six spans. Similar intermediate columns are present on the external side walls. The wall facing London Street has been extended to the left, providing ground floor glazed accommodation to No. 7 shop.
