Description

LONDON STREET SU 1484 NE SWINDON (north side) 6/119 Carriage works No. 8 shop GV II Carriage works, now industrial workshops. 1870-72 for GWR, extended to east 1872-3. Rock-faced snecked Foxwood rubble with Bath stone quoins, strings and window dressings. Slate roofs with apex glazing and ventilation cowls. Street elevation of 15 bays in 5 groups of 3, 2 storeys. Ground floor arcaded windows with segmental heads and corniced keystones on cast iron columns. First floor brick segmental window heads, also with corniced keystones and multiple pivot lights. Glazed doors to ground level. East facade splayed. Internally, ground level iron joists on cast iron columns carrying brick segmental vaults. Upper floor 8 bays of cast iron round section keeled stanchions, lugged at storey heights, carrying I- section plates and light steel angle trusses. 6 spans. Similar intermediate columns on external side walls. Wall to London Street extended left with ground floor glazed accommodation to No. 7 shop (q.v.).
