Description

The boundary wall to the former Carriage Lifting Shop at the Great Western Railway Works was built around 1870. It is made of rock-faced snecked Foxwood rubble with Bath stone dressings.

The wall runs from south-west to north-east, parallel to the south-east of the main railway line, enclosing part of the former GWR works where the carriage lifting shop once stood, now demolished.

The main stretch of the wall is about 155 meters long. It stands approximately 3 meters high at the west end and rises to 6 meters at the east end, retaining higher ground on the north side. The lower section of the wall features continuous, uninterrupted masonry. Above this, there are inset rectangular panels with quoined jambs, a continuous string course beneath, chamfered lintels above, and ashlar coping stones. The wall includes two wide segmental arched openings with ashlar dressings, as well as a blocked doorway and window next to the western opening that leads to a tunnel. The eastern end, which creates a splayed entrance to the station, was rebuilt in the 1970s using reused stone, and the panels were omitted.
