Description
The wall to the former sawmill and shop at British Rail Engineering Limited Swindon Works was built in 1868 and is part of the Great Western Railway carriageworks. It is constructed from rock-faced snecked Fox's Wood stone, featuring ashlar limestone quoins and strings. The wall consists of nine wide panels that are separated by quoined pilasters. The fourth and fifth bays have first floor glazing with 16 panes and bottom hoppers set within concrete quoins and sills. At ground level, there is a wide opening fitted with panelled gates. This structure is listed for its group value alongside the facade of the Trimming Shop in Emlyn Square and Nos. 7 and 8 Carriageworks shops on London Street.
