Description
1, 2, and 3 Bathampton Street are a terrace of three cottages built in 1846 for the Great Western Railway Company. Constructed from ashlar limestone with black mortar, they feature slate roofs and blue brick stacks. The cottages are two stories high, with one bay and a side passage for each, designed to be two rooms deep with a rear outbuilding. They have a low plinth and chamfered surrounds for the windows and doors. The doors are modern six-pane types, while the windows are four-pane sashes on both floors. The cottages underwent extensive renovation around 1972. This terrace is part of a village designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to accommodate workers for the Great Western Railway, making it one of Britain's best-preserved and architecturally ambitious railway settlements.
