Description
17, Emlyn Square is a house built between 1845 and 1846, originally serving as an electricity substation for the Great Western Railway Company. The building is constructed from coursed squared rubble and features a slate roof. It is two stories tall with three bays. The central entrance is flanked by a substation inserted in the right bay. The door and windows have chamfered stone quoined surrounds, all topped with label moulds. The ground floor has twelve-pane casements, while the upper floor has sixteen-pane casements.
This house is part of a village designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to accommodate workers for the Great Western Railway. The village's construction began in 1842, with most buildings completed by 1855. The area is recognized as one of Britain's best-preserved and architecturally ambitious railway settlements.
