Description

No. 15 Emlyn Square is a house, later converted into flats, built in 1846 for the Great Western Railway Company as part of a village designed to house workers for the railway works. The village, initially planned by I.K. Brunel in 1840, was constructed between 1842 and 1855. The building is a three-storey corner block constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins, and has a slate roof. The front elevation has three bays facing Bathampton Street, with a splayed corner and one bay facing Emlyn Square. A two-storey extension provides an entrance. The windows have chamfered stone surrounds, with twenty-pane casements on the ground floor, sixteen-pane casements above, and eight-pane casements on the splayed section. Each gable has a keyed oeils de boeuf.
