Description
The stone building on the island platform at Swindon Railway Station is a 19th-century structure faced in Swindon sandstone, which is squared and coursed. Originally rendered, the stone is now exposed at the first floor.
The building measures eleven bays by three bays. The sixth bay projects slightly, which was formerly the central bay with an attached footbridge. The six bays at the west end are two storeys high under a shallow pitched roof, while the five bays at the east end are only one storey due to the first floor being cut back. At the west end, there is a projection beneath a pedimented gable. A painted eaves cornice runs around three sides of the building but not at the east end of the first floor, which was added when the upper part of the building was cut back. The ground floor features rendered channeled rustication, possibly introduced during remodelling in the 1970s. At the first floor, a plain plaster band and irregular courses above the canopy suggest repairs or evidence of alterations made in the 1880s. Many ground-floor doors and windows have been altered, while most first-floor window openings have plain eared stone surrounds with keystones, although several have been replaced or rendered over. There is a tripartite window in the west projection.
The canopies are supported by decorative cast-iron columns from around the 1880s, with their bases now set in concrete-filled oil drums. These columns support a canopy structure made of timber joists and iron brackets, with roofs that are part glazed and part covered with corrugated metal sheeting.
The interior does not contain any historic fixtures, fittings, or finishes of special interest. The void above the recent suspended ceiling tiles on the ground floor was not inspected.
