Description

Two houses in terrace, later divided into three dwellings, were built in 1846 for the Great Western Railway Company. They were constructed as part of a new village designed by I.K. Brunel to house workers for the Great Western Railway works, situated south of the railway line. Construction began in 1842, with the cottages west of Emlyn Square being built first (1842-1843), followed by those on the east side (1845-1847). The remainder of the cottages were completed between 1853 and 1855. The village is notable as one of Britain's best-preserved and most ambitious railway settlements.

The houses are constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble, with a coursed rubble rear wall. They have asbestos slate roofs and ashlar stacks with rendered diagonal shafts on the party wall and right gable. Number 1 is a two-storey, three-bay dwelling with a central door leading to a hallway, two rooms deep, and a 20th-century outbuilding to the rear. Numbers 2 and 3 are single-bay dwellings each with an inset entrance. They feature a low plinth, chamfered two-pane casement windows, and door surrounds with pyramidal stops. All ground floor openings have label moulds. The houses now have 20th-century fifteen-pane doors and four-pane sashes.
