Description
A terrace of sixteen cottages was built between 1846 and 1847 for the Great Western Railway Company as part of a village intended to house railway workers. The village was designed by I.K. Brunel and constructed south of the railway line, with building work beginning in 1842. This terrace forms part of the block built between 1845 and 1847, on the east side of Emlyn Square. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared rubble with ashlar door and window surrounds, and have coursed rubble rear walls. They feature slate roofs and brick stacks on party walls. Each cottage is two storeys high, with one bay and a through side passage, containing two rooms deep. A 20th-century brick lean-to has been added to the rear. The cottages sit on a low, chamfered plinth and feature 20th-century fifteen-pane glazed doors with chamfered surrounds and run-out stops. They also have four-pane sashes in chamfered surrounds. The cottages were extensively renovated around 1974.
