Description

No 13 Shop, also known as the Old L2 Shop, is a locomotive tender or tank shop that has been converted into a machine shop. It was built in 1876 and features an iron frame with red brick exterior walls. The building has been partly combined with later structures, but its long, low frontages still display an arcaded treatment.

Inside, there are eight rows of cast iron columns, with each row containing nine columns that support a wrought iron and glazed roof. The columns are arranged in two tiers; the lower tier consists of heavier columns that support crane gantry beams and some have brackets for line shafting, while the upper tier features much shorter columns. The shop houses one original 15-ton crane with timber beams and an iron front, as well as four 10-ton cranes made of iron that have been refurbished in steel. All cranes were electrified in the early 20th century, and four still retain their original motors. Additionally, there are several original fitted cranes with swinging arms.

This building is part of the significant expansion of the Great Western Railway works during the 1870s and serves as a notable example of factory architecture from that era. It is also part of an important group of Victorian industrial buildings at the GWR works.
