Description

The Hydraulic Engine House, built in 1897, is a notable structure located on Tydd Gote Road in Sutton Bridge. The machinery was supplied by Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth & Co. Ltd. The building features an iron and red brick construction with slate roofs. It has a ribbed iron tower topped with a hipped roof that has overhanging eaves. The structure is two storeys high and consists of two bays, with no openings on the ground floor. The upper level has two glazing bar sash windows with flat heads on both the front and rear, along with a single similar sash window on each side wall.

At the rear, there is a red brick range that is single storey and three bays wide. This section includes a large segmental arched glazing bar fixed light with a flush wedge lintel, and to the right, there are two segmental arched doorways with plank doors, the one on the far right being wider. The rear also features three similar windows, with a small blocked doorway to the left.

The hydraulic plant inside consists of three accumulators and direct-acting double cylinder pumps. Originally, the motive power came from two locomotive-type boilers, which have since been replaced by two electric motors. This building is connected underground to Cross Keys Bridge, Sutton Bridge.
