Description
The footbridge, road bridge, and sluices at Tydd St Mary North Level were built in 1859 and 1866 for the North Level Commissioners by Robert Stephenson. They have been repaired in 1881, 1945, and 1967. The structures are made of black-coloured red brick, ashlar, wood, and iron.
On the east side, there are two brick piers with painted ashlar coping. A pair of wooden gates with iron fittings projects from the center, forming a triangle, with single similar gates on either side of the piers. The piers support a 20th-century plank bridge with aluminium railings. Behind this is the brick parapet of the road bridge, which is coped with ashlar and topped with decorative cast iron railings featuring decorative brackets. The parapet has a plaque that reads, "Constructed for the North Level Commissioners by Geo. Robt. Stephenson Esq. CE AD 1859."
On either side of the bridge, there are sloping brick walls coped with ashlar that run parallel for 7 meters before sweeping out for about 5 meters. In front of the sluice gates is an iron footbridge with three arched spans, the central span being wider and supported by paired slim columns. The arches feature keystones and spandrels decorated with open fretwork, a design that appears on both sides of the footbridge. This footbridge is inscribed with "Henry Grissell London 1866."
On the west side, there are two ashlar-coped brick cutwaters with three sets of gates. The cutwaters support a plank footbridge that holds three sets of 20th-century ratchets. The parapet and railings on this side are similar to those on the east side, but there is a small gate providing access to the footbridge. Adjacent to the sluice on the east side are three sets of 19th-century iron ratchets.
