Description

Greyfriars is a house located on Hannath Road in Tydd St. Mary. It dates from the early 17th century and has undergone alterations in the mid-18th century and 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, with some fragments of ashlar rubble and moulded ashlar that may be medieval in origin. The roof is slate, though the left-hand range has been covered with 20th-century tiles. The gables are brick-coped with kneelers and some tumbling, while the main range features a half-hipped roof to the right. The projecting right-hand range has a rendered gable.

The house is two storeys high and has four bays in the main range. To the left, there is a single-storey plus attic single bay range, and to the right, a projecting gabled two-storey single bay range with a lean-to that projects into the re-entrant angle. The building has a doorway with a 20th-century door and a plain doorcase. To the left of the doorway is a single segmental arched 20th-century tripartite glazing bar casement, while to the right are a similar casement and two additional two-light casements under flat heads. Further to the right, in the side wall of the lean-to, is a doorway with glazed double doors, and in the far right gabled bay, there is a single segmental arched five-light casement.

Above these, there are four similar two-light casements, with a single gabled half-dormer containing a tripartite casement to the left in the attic. To the right in the gabled bay, there is a single three-light casement. There is evidence of earlier first-floor windows. A wall extending from the lean-to features a 14th-century pointed double chamfered arched doorway with a plank door.
