Description
The No 19 Shop and No 20 Shop (North Bay) Old N Shop at British Rail Engineering Limited Swindon Works is a machine shop originally built as a turning shop around 1842 by Daniel Gooch and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Constructed from coursed squared rubble sourced from Box tunnel, it features a corrugated sheet roof. The west facade is two storeys high, with bays separated by pilasters and horizontal wooden boarding between the windows. Most windows retain their original glazing, with mullions and a transom below. The windows are 2-light with mullions above, each divided into vertical panes and opening with a central pivot. Inside, the space is now full height, but remnants of the first floor can be seen in a partition. The north end of the building showcases the original wooden roof trusses, while the rest has later steel replacements. This building is noted for being the best preserved of the original structures, having opened on January 2, 1843. It is part of a significant group of Victorian industrial buildings at the Great Western Railway works.
