Description

This is an office building located to the north of the General Offices at Swindon Works, constructed in 1841 by Brunel and Gooch for The Great Western Railway Company. The building has undergone alterations around 1871, 1913-16, 1929, and in the 1950s. It features box rubblestone brought to course and a Welsh slate roof. The structure is two storeys high and consists of 17 bays, with a fitters room and engine house at the south end.

The west elevation includes a plinth and giant piers that define the 14 left-hand bays. These bays have 1950s windows, with small-pane metal windows on the ground floor featuring segmental brick arches, and paired 4-pane sash windows on the first floor beneath stone lintels. Originally, the ground floor had 4-pane windows and the first floor had 2-pane windows with weatherboarding in between. A former round-arched doorway in bay 1 has been converted into a window, while a door has been inserted in bay 2. Bay 8 features a double door with a segmental brick arch. The three right-hand bays were altered around 1929, now having a segmental brick-arched door and small-pane sash windows.

The east elevation is mostly concealed, but the piers that frame internal openings are still visible, showcasing roll-moulded arrises. Inside, there is a jack-arched fire-proof ceiling in the former engine room, and at least 14 of the original queen-post roof trusses remain.

This building is significant as part of the original Great Western Railway works and is one of a notable group of Victorian industrial buildings at the site.
