Description
The Charfield War Memorial is made of Portland stone and features a wheel cross with pointed terminals. Below the cross, there is a moulded capital that sits atop an octagonal tapering column, which is placed on an octagonal plinth with an overhanging moulded edge. The main face of the plinth, which faces the road, is inscribed with the words "LEST WE FORGET TO THE MEN OF CHARFIELD WHO FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The two side faces list the ranks and names of 11 individuals who are commemorated. Another face of the plinth is inscribed with "SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945," and below it are the names of four fallen soldiers from that conflict. The plinth rests on a square base, which has the word "VICTORY" inscribed on the side facing the road. Behind the memorial, there is a single step leading to a paved area that is surrounded by a semi-circular rubble wall. This wall contains seven tablets inscribed with the ranks and names of those who served in both World Wars. The tablet located directly behind the memorial states, "THE NAMES OF THE GLORIOUS DEAD ARE CARVED ON THE BASE OF THE CROSS & OF THOSE WHO SERVED ON THE PANELS ON THIS WALL." All inscriptions are highlighted in black. The memorial is situated outside St. John’s Church, which is also listed at Grade II, along the main road through the village.
