Description
The former Stationmaster's House at Charfield Station, built around 1843-44 for the Bristol and Gloucester Railway by engineer I.K. Brunel, is now used as offices. This building features ashlar stonework and a bitumised slate roof, with ashlar diagonal stacks that have cornices. It is designed in an L-plan and exhibits a Tudor Gothic style, standing two storeys tall. The house includes two 2-light and 3-light casement and cross windows. On the west side, the left bay slightly projects and is topped with a gable that has a plain bargeboard. The east side has a gabled wing along with a 20th-century lean-to and door. The buildings at Charfield Station represent the only surviving intact group of structures on this railway line, which was significant for completing the route from Exeter to Newcastle in 1844.
